I had one of these apart recently on a '96. I think the driver and passgr side are identical, just mirror images of each other.
I just went out to the trunk of my backup 9000 and pulled out a driver latchworks I have in reserve. The linkage to the unlock button is very direct and can't fail to work if enough pressure is applied. In your situation I would lock a pair of vise grips onto the knob and use them against the top of the inner panel to pry up on the knob. Or tap up on them with a hammer.
First of all though, maybe the door is just stuck somehow? Put your shoulder to it while sitting inside with door latch handle held to open.
The latch works has lots of sliding points and they corrode badly, grease hardens up, and nothing wants to move. That is apparently your problem but it needs to be very bad to show what you're getting. If you get it open I'd pull door inner panel and remove entire latchworks to do a thorough freeing up and lube job. Maybe spray lube can get to the key points.
The link from key cylinder to latch works is also pretty direct but it's kind of flimsy, nylon ball-socket pop-ons onto tiny ball swivels, and the link is heavy wire but with a couple of bends. One of my cars had the ball on key cylinder sheared off. The car will normally still unlock just fine by key since the key cylinder also has an electric sensor that sends a message to the lock motor to unlock or lock door. But if things are too stiff for that motor to push or pull you're s.o.l. Direct link comes in handy if battery is dead of course.
Sorry no working digital camera or I'd give you pix of what you're dealing with. I did post a step-by-step for getting to latchworks on here recently.
