'94 9000 Aero, 5-speed w/ 180k miles.
I thought that careful maintenance and judicious driving would spare me this day, but it's arrived.
Last night, driving home from a friend's house, my car started making a noise like grinding gears whenever I would coast forward. The pitch is coincident with the forward vehicle speed, and occurs if the clutch is in or out, or if the transmission is in neutral. I can feel the vibrations of the grinding coming through the shifter.
The only thing that changes it is if I apply even the slightest bit of power, a light touch on the pedal, and the noise goes away. Otherwise, so far, the gears seem to operate fine, and shifting feels normal.
So, is it time to pull it out and send it to Eriksson? Do they even still rebuild 9000 trannys? Is it possible there is another cause? One thing that came to mind would be the starter gear not fully retracting, or perhaps a bad bearing in the half shaft. I haven't gotten under there yet to start inspecting, but I'm curious what you all would suggest I be looking for.
Thanks!
