This is definitely more easily done from above. The original sensor was 24 mm and if anyone doesn't have a 24 mm socket then they can get by with a deep 15/16" socket. The aftermarket replacement sender is 22 mm, and for that a deep 7/8" socket will work. I don't know the torque spec. The Haynes manual says "tighten securely". I was able to get it done from above without removing bolts from the oil filler.
