Trunk Reflective-Decor Panel Removal

My 98 CSE got totaled while parked on street by skidding Silverado. Swapping better parts from it to 96 CS which has a slight crack on décor panel and bowes out above license plate; so when reach to lift tailgate am more often than not pinching fingers. Found couple of old posts on removing - have license plate holder off per instructions but not sure which way to move panel to slide off - sideways or down? And how to get it started - pry with big screwdriver? Don't want to damage it.
Grateful for any help, suggestions.
