There isn't much to know except that you'll get worse fuel economy with an automatic even if you drive like grandma. Keep your tires inflated and worry about something else.
Years ago there was a big debate over whether the fluid should be Dexron III or a synthetic equivalent. I went synthetic with Mobil 1 ATF in 2009 with 148K miles and have no transmission problems. YMMV of course.
If you don't know how fresh your fluid is (or even what kind it is) then do a triple change so you know it is nearly 90% fresh. The reasons for the triple change is the system holds 8.9 quarts but you can change only about 4.5 quarts at a time. Here is the math:
1st change: 50% fresh
2nd change: 75% fresh
3rd change: 87.5% fresh «---Sweet Spot
4th change: 93.75% fresh (not enough benefit to justify the cost and work).
Drive it 100 miles or so between the 3 changes to make sure the new and old fluid are thoroughly blended. After doing a triple change, do a single change every 10,000 - 15,000 miles.
The procedure for changing the fluid is easy. I can post it here if you need it.
If your transmission isn't shifting normally then it probably needs new governor seals which don't cost much. My governor seals are still original. Other than that, keep the fluid fresh and take it easy in 1st and 2nd gear.
