Clutch suddenly lying on the floor; no clutch!

This morning I went out to my son's '91 non-Turbo 9000, and discovered its clutch pedal lying on the floor, with absolutely no pressure. I tried hand-pumping it vigorously; with no effect. I checked and added brake fluid; with no effect. I looked under the car for leaks, and discovered a small puddle that tasted bitter, like brake fluid. But it's in an odd place, at the rear of the engine. Using a flashlight, the only possible culprit is a black hose that looks ozzy/wet, about 3/8 inch in diameter, running a couple inches out from the firewall and close to the ground. Yesterday, the car drove fine except, in hindsight, maybe the shifting seemed a little "not right." But prior to that, no problems. What is going on here?
