So the broken bracket was the belt tensioner bracket or the alternator bracket?
Assuming its the belt tension bracket there's two failure modes, as you say, long term metal fatigue or failure due to non-regular force. From reading the TSN over the years and owner of two 9000's I would hazard a guess that failure of the belt tension brkt does not typ occur without some issue present among the items on the serp belt route. At 211k miles various causes could stress the belt tension brkt like the pwr steering pump pulley bearing, alternator pully bearing, water pump pulley bearing and/or bad ac compressor. Usually bad bearing(s) can be heard, but can require a mech stethescope to isolate. Sooo, with the belt now off it would be good to feel/turn each pulley and see if there is significant play or rough feeling (although sometimes a bad pulley bearing will not feel rough until there is a load on it).
Fyi prob should replace the tens brkt bolt that goes into timing cover.
Let us know what you find out.
