Backstory here: http://imgur.com/a/GSYDw
Sure enough, the white (positive) wire between the trunk and the 3rd brake light snapped completely apart with a slight tug. So that was the problem. The next problem was that the break happened in the gnarly rubber enclosure between the hatchback lid and the roof. So I had no choice but to cut it open and splice the wire back together.
That makes it susceptible to water... so after wrapping up the splice with electrical tape (sue me; I wasn't going to wait another week for shrink tubing to arrive), I smothered the thing in 3 coats of rubber cement. And tomorrow I'll smother it will another 3 coats, each coat applied several hours apart. Then I'll wrap some fish line around the original rubber tube to get it close to its original shape, and smother that with even more rubber cement.
The car is a monthly driver and garaged now... so I'm not asking this fix to last another 275k miles or 23 years.
