The rearward bushings tend to die between 35K and 50K miles. They make the steering a bit sloppy and can make noise if really worn. The ball joints fail, too.
The joints are easy to do--a couple of wrenches and a hammer. The bushings aren't bad but it can be very hard to get the bushing itself off the end of the control arm. It can require an air hammer or a lot of persuading if you don't have air tools. New rubber ones are about $30 a set from eEuro (just did them).
With bushings you have a choice of rubber or poly. I've done both. Poly tightens up the steering really well but adds some vibration and harshens the ride. I had rubber ones, went to poly, and just went back to rubber to smooth the ride on our less than smooth New England roads.
