Still struggling with crappy performance on Greta, the green 97 CSE.(I don't name cars, but the PO did)
Really rough idle, tach swinging all over the place, awful gas mileage, feels like it shuts off momentarily while driving down the road, etc. Sometimes it straightens out and fly's right and drives like it used to. Smooth and fast. Usually at the end of a 15 mile commute. Sometime it runs crappy all the way to work. I plan on doing an organized troubleshooting session this weekend. This past week I changed the ignition switch as it would not crank every time you turned the switch all the way. Swapping in an old OEM switch seemed to fix that. Other symptoms are the loss of full voltage to the radio and the little tombstone display on the dash. It resets the time to midnight every time I start the car. Also, it will display the time unless I turn the radio on, then the display goes blank. Turn the radio off and it will light up again and reset to midnight. The radio will not work. The EDU on the dash comes and goes. That's been happening for a long time. Common problem. Gas gauge goes to zero, temp gauge drops to bottom. Sometimes it wakes up and you get your gauges and EDU back. I need to remove the dash top and wiggle the connector to see it that will fix it.
I checked the upper rad hose when I get to my destination and it's not hot or under pressure. Maybe 110 deg F. It doesn't consume coolant. That tells me my Tsat is probably stuck open. It happens. Temp gauge, when it works, shows cold.
The plan is, in order:
1.)Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect, then check grounds (ECU, chassis, etc) and +15 voltage
2.)Swap out the Tstat, pretty sure it's stuck
3.)Double check, then triple check for vacuum leaks
4.)Swap in yet another spare DI cassette
5.)Swap out IAC from my spare Aero engine, after cleaning and testing
6.)Swap out the ECU temperature sensor, if I can get it off the spare Aero engine (tried last night and the cable seems to be tied into the engine harness
7.)Swap out the ECU (IF the auto trans and manual trans is the same PN, Google says they are)
8.)Purchase and install a new Bosch 13662 front O2 sensor
9.)Start all over because I must of missed something
10.)Dynamite
I do have a Tech II so I will take a look at that to see if there are any odd sensor readings. Was going to swap the CPS since I have one but I managed to strip the T30 torx trying to get the retaining screw loose. That task moved to the bottom of the list.
I have lots of spare parts. Instrument cluster, IAC valves, ECU, etc. My goal is to get this back running right and use it as my winter beater so I don't need to drive the 02 Aero, since it is mostly rust free. I have a good set of snows on salad shooter alloys that I'll throw on it once it's running right.
If I missed anything on my to-do list, please feel free to chime in.
