Meg,
TKC is right about the hose. It works with the turbo to help control boost, and if it comes off then you get too much boost. It will also cause a vacuum leak which could give your cara rough idle. If re-connecting the hose didn't help much (it should at least stop it from surging) then there is a chance the extra boost you experienced momentarily blew off another hose creating another vacuum leak. Carefully check all the small rubber hoses at both ends to make sure they are connected. Pay special attention to the small hose coming out of the intake mannifold (large silver colored thing at the top/back of engine with a lot of hoses coming out of it.) Trace all the hoses for there full length and make sure none of them has blown off. Some hoses, like the one that disapears into the fender or the one that goes into the little black cannister down near the air filter can be tested by sucking on them. If you draw air, then you have a leak. I really hope this helps. The good news is that your problem is probably not severe even if it may be a bit tricky to diagnose.
Craig
