I just had a similiar experience with my son's Volvo 744T. I paid $8400 for this thing 5 years ago when it had 84K miles. Gave it to the kid when it turned 150K and figured it might be worth $4000. Car now has 210K and might be worth $1500-$2000. Kid hauls his junk and dog in the car so the interior is pretty gone although mechanically the car is in real good shape. He gets rear-ended on I-270 in Columbus the other day. Drives the car away as there is not enough damage to prevent that. In fact, the car drives pretty normal. Trunk closes, etc just one rear door binds a bit. So the adjuster from the at-fault driver's company shows up, says after putting all the numbers in his handy-dandy insurance machine that the car is worth $5300. Kid says I'll take it, buys the car back for $900, has the highway patrol inspect it, and he is now driving it around with the car not really looking a whole lot worse than before.
I was in the insurance business for 10 years and I still can't believe this kind of thing.
