Are you arguing for sticking to fossil based upon cost? I think that your own math shows that if you change fossil at 3k, and syn at 10k, that the oil costs are the same. The cost of a good filter is $5-15, so you would save $10-30 on filters over 10k by using synthetic. If you do your own changes then you are also saving a lot of time.
If you are arguing that changing fossil more frequently, along with more frequent filter changes, results in cleaner oil in the engine, you will get a lot of debate on this board and elsewhere. On both sides of the issue. There is a number of folks who justifiably reason that a good oil like GTX has served them well for decades, and their Saabs have gone 300k+, so it must be good.
There is also a lot of evidence that fossil has a lot of impurities which causes the oil to deteriorate quicker and leave carbon and sludge deposits in the engine. Synthetic seems to protect the engine better with cold starts, the main cause of wear in modern cars. As Robert mentions, it is also likely to minimize coking of the turbo bearing. A good syn like Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Mobil1, have good detergent qualities that keep the engine a lot cleaner than conventional fossil oils.
There has been a lot of talk on this board about oils. Either choice is good, but Robert has sold me on Royal Purple. I recently switched, and have not noticed any change in hp or mpg, but think it is the best thing to do.
