If you have access to someone who has the Saab shop manual (not Haynes), it has a good procedure for removing the transmission. I followed their method, and got it out fairly easily, although it's at least an 8 hour R&R.
Email me if you can't find the manual, and I'll see if I can locate my greasy copy.
In a nutshell, the procedure is easiest if you jack up the front and lower the trans through. First, drop (or remove) the left subframe. It's hinged on the inboard ends, but with the ABS lines, I had to remove it for clearance. Instead of fancy engine supports, I used light chain and a 2x3 with wood blocks on the inner fenders to hold the engine up. The transmission separates from the block at the bell housing. You need to remove the starter from the rear of the engine. That's a real knuckle-buster.
Did you lose only fifth gear, or reverse too? I'd hate to see you remove the transmission if it's actually the shift linkage (an easier fix.) :)
