Your post didn't say the engine was braced, unless the jack was on it. Using two 2x4's is easiest. One on the engine at the lifting eye near the end, and one on the tranny. If the engine isn't supported, there is a moment on the joint of the tranny/block and the input shaft, and typically two bushings on the perimeter, will all bind. With the transmission disconnected, the block is only supported on one end.
