Clutch Fluid Container and Master Cylinder Questions

Hello
I am experiencing problems with my clutchsystem, and since it isnt getting worse, I am looking for alternative explanations than master and slave cylinder leaks. The clutch pedal is lower than normal and I am hoping that it could be due to lack of hydralic oil in the system. Therefore I have these questions:
1- In my brake fluid container (year '90) there are several small sections (partitions) all above the MAX level of break fluid. One of the partitions has a connected hose that seem to end up in the master clutch cylinder. Is this the oil container that refills the clutch hydralic system with oil? In that case, should it be filled with oil? (right now it is empty)
2- How does the Master cylinder work - more specific; how does the refilling of hydrlic oil work in the master cylinder.
3- There is a spring behind tha master cylinder that seem to pull back the clutch pedal. Is it the only thing that should lift up the pedal, or are there springs in the mastercylinder and/or slave cylinder/clurch that alos lifts up the pedal??
Best regards
Jakob Larsen
