Open the hood and rev the engine some. It may not be running gear (but it could be) - it might be an idler pulley getting tired. In your year, there's an idler pulley for the AC belt, and another for the serpentine belt. The bearings get tired and the pulleys get loud. It might start showing up at a couple of thousand RPM before you'd notice it at idle. Just a thought.
If you do replace the idler puley(s), by all means go aftermarket. The dealer will charge $70 for the same pulley you can buy mailorder for $20.
Good luck!
