It sounds like a 'it will be what it will be'approach, and if it works for you, that's fine. My attitude with mechanics is the same as with doctors - explain it to me, I'm paying the bill, and it's my car (body). If they get annoyed at too many questions, find a better mechanic.
It's always good to know what the mechanic intends on doing. For example, on my folks Saab, the mechanic told me it was leaking oil and needed a new main seal. ($500 - it was a 99). Yes, it was technically leaking oil. But at the rate it was leaking oil (less than 1/2 qt in 4000 miles) it would be the year 2050 before it paid for the seal job. I've also had Saab certified mechanics tell me I needed a new timing chain based on 'it sounds like the chain is bad.' They were wrong. That was about 3 years ago. This summer I pulled the valve cover to replace the gasket, and inspected the timing chain per the manual. It's in great shape, and the 'sound' was the typical Saab chain thrash.
If you're paying the bill, you should understand what they are doing, and why. The guy may be a Saab certified master technician, but that doesn't guarantee he isn't trying to save up for a condo in ski country.
