The C-clamp method is not fool proof. I have to be very careful. For the clamp slips out of the tensioner rather easily. Only at the right angle do I get the tensioner to compress sufficiently and STAY that way so the idler can be installed with enough slop of the belt. It'll take me perhaps one out of every four tries. But if the C-clamp slips, I'll just try it again. I have zero hourly rate fixing my own car.
