I use it as a flush and I get some nasty gear thrash. Difficult shifting as well. Try the Saab synthetic. I use synthetic Amsoil 75W90 in my highly modded '88. Shifting is smooth but still has that balky feel,,,trad-off I decided to make to extend the timer on my transmission (waaay too muck torque). I was told that the Saab syn is similar to a 75W80 gear oil (may actually be one),,and that stuff shifts MUCH better.
Some say it isn't even nessesary to change the fluid as there is no place for dirt to contaminate the oil,,,,but I count little pieces of metal (and metallic sheen from grinding gears) as contamination IMHO. GEar oil doesn't suspend this junk like regular oil,,,so definately go with the Saab syn.
