Car audio devices, and in particular CD players, lead a much harsher life than their home audio counterparts. Seven years is actually considered an excellent life span, if your unit has not needed any work during that time. The spindle may well e shot, as Justin says, and also probably needs new optics. (the laser/lens/pickup assembly) These things aren't cheap, but what's even less cheap is the $50-$100 an hour to have somebody fix it. $85 flate rate would certainly not apply to a unit which needs either the optics or spndle replaced, much less both. Good aftermarket decks are so cheap these days...
Personally I like the Blaupunkts.. the Pioneer/Kenwood/Clarion are all too flashy for my tastes, they look out of place in the 9000, I think. Maybe not in a Lexus IS300 or some riced-out Civic with Indiglo gauges - blech!
Just my opinion, of course. :) I'd recommend you check out Magnolia Hi-Fi over that _other_ place Justin mentioned, if you are in the Portland or Western Washington area (and Spokane). If not...well I guess CC could do in a pinch, their salespeople seem to know WAY less than I do though, not much help there...
Good luck!
Aaron
