my wife's 86 turbo blew her auto tranny last year. displayed same symptoms as yours (quite common failure mode for this particular ZF unit). decided that the best course of action was a complete rebuild. although i've rebuilt manual trannies, this was my first attempt at an auto. purchased a rebuild kit from a local trans wholesaler (gaskets, rings, steels, clutch plates, etc.) and picked up a zf workshop manual from my saab dealer (this is an absolute must). i had my local machine ship fabricate some tools that are necessary to disassemble and reassemble some of the clutch mechanisms and some other items.
it is doable (well, at least i did it). my wife's unit has accumulated about 15,000 miles with no trouble. will assist you any way i can. just email me.
