Open the hood, and stand at the front of the car. Down and to your right, just under the windshield washer fluid reservoir, is a large black plastic cylinder - maybe 6 inches in diameter, about a foot long. One end is molded into the wheel arch liner, the other has an air hose off it. The air filter is in that cylinder. The end (lid) of the cylinder is held on with three metal 'over-center' clips. First, I like to remove the Air Mass Meter, the aluminum device in the air hose, also held on with clips. Move it carefully out of the way, and be careful not to lose the black rubber O rings. Next, flip the three latches holding the lid of the air filter housing on. With the lid off, you can slide the air filter out. It takes some twists and turns, but it can be removed. Be patient. Installation is the reverse of removal. Again, it takes some twisting.
The Saab OEM filter is just fine, and most autoparts stores will sell a substitute filter for less $$$ that will work just fine. Some folks go for K&N filters, which you clean instead of toss out when the get dirty. The K&N's are less restrictive, so some folks say they give better performance. Just my opinion, but unless you replace the filter housing, stay with a stock filter, or a stock replacement from the autoparts store.
Good luck!
