Whoa, wait a minute.
I agree with all I've read here, but I have an "enlightened consumer" and ex-audio-geek question.
If the amplifier has "crapped" out, then there would be NO SIGNAL or at least a grossly diminished signal to the rear speaker(s). Is that the starting point I've missed here, or is this related to a mystery intermittent noise problem, esp. at start up?
The "enlightened consumer" might be better "skeptical consumer" at the "crapped out" diagnosis from a salesman. It might be profitable here to buy a couple of capacitors and try some filtering on the output side, as I'd be willing to bet that the age-related problem might be cured with some filtering.
I like the diagnosis in general, it is sound. However, the idea that you might have to buy an amp might be best saved until you try a modestly hefty cap filtering the output. (Radio shack sells a bunch, just tell 'em you want to try to filter some noise out of your car stereo...)
Hope this adds to the knowledge-space,
Ben
