Handy FYI, since the 518 is so dern expensive, instead of running a bead of it, put some on your finger, and spread it out to a medium film on the mating surfaces, it will cure faster and you will get less squeeze-out on the inside and outside of the flanges. And your tube of ~$15 or whatever sealant goes a lot farther.
If we are doing a cyl. head and the deck on the block doesn't get surfaced (which is never) we spread a thin film of 518 on the whole top surface of the block and especially around the oil return passages and timing chain area, it will mask the little surface imperfections in the deck and seals right up.
Same thing on oil pans. The reason you don't want to use RTV/Silicone esp. on the oil pan is the squeeze-out can come off in little strings and clog up the screen on the oil pickup tube because it will still cure in little beads - the 518 and other anaerobics will only cure when they are clamped between surfaces without any oxygen present, so the little beads will remain gummy and fluid and won't peel off.
Best,
Drew
