NO on the slave as source. (100% sure) I would just run the set up as Gary said/ or/ spend the time in Primary housing where the noise you are describing is caused by a combination of loose and stretched chains and some wear in the hydro chain tensioner. What you are hearing is chain "wobble" where the loose slack gets whipping in a certain low frequency pattern: hence the drumming loud noise you describe. Find a later 5 speed tensioner that is clean and metal grit free and examine the bores and piston shoes carefully for scratching and looseness. Fit the new chains. Yes the chain cover/chains/sprockets can be replaced "insitu" Provided the alternator is removed. Pop the input out no clutch work at ALL needed) Pull the cover after supporting under oil case half. and The upper chain sprocket bearing is readily available but is a bit tricky to press out (3 finger Saab tool) and press in requires another driver that only contacts the outer race. Note: The Snap ring groove will be filled with metal "dust" as it is the perfect centrifugal oil filter. Clean out with brake clean and tooth brush. I have been able to fit a one tooth more top gear with non new chains ( 32/30 chain ratio not listed in build charts) and this relaxes the tack at cruise MPH at 60 by 300 RPM. When fitting the tensioner bolts use spermatex on threads as oil seepage will occur. 4-6 ounces oil needed to add through Inspection cover when finished chain case cover installation. Don
