In addition to the differences Jim noted regarding gas caps, the 2-door cars (1969-1980 in the US) and 4-door cars (1970-1977 in the US)have the cabin air exhaust vents stamped into the upper rear quarter and surrounded by a piece of chrome trim, while the 3-door (1974-1978 in the US) and 5-door cars (1977 and 1978 in the US) have the plastic vent trim mounted into one large opening in the upper quarter. FWIW, the 5-door cars share the fuel filler arrangement (door on the right lower fender) with the 3-door cars, while the 4-door cars share the 2-door gas filler (exposed cap on the upper rear panel, left side).
I hope that helps!
Best,
Gary
