Tom,
The device on the left side of the car is indeed the accumulator, and it is on the supply side of the system between the pump and the filter. If the accumlator is bad, it will usually leak overboard and leave gas on the floor.
The return line enters the tank at the top corner on the right side of the car. (comes out under the car near where the brake lines come out) Originally, there was a check valve in the line to prevent fuel spillage if you go the car upside down. Those usually leak overboard, but it may be possible for that to be blocked. In any event, that is just held in with clamps so it should be possible to remove. There is an all-metal diesel check valve that can be used as a replacement - shoot me a note off line and I can try to find the info.
Once you have the check valve disconnected, you should be able to blow out the return line from the fuel distribtor back to the tank.
It looks like the Delorean guy has pretty much all the parts you could ever need to fix the K-Jetronic fuel injection system, luck for us! I don't know of another source for the line, but it looks like he has it - way down the fuel injection page.
Best,
Gary
