David, I have been told by several reliable sources that any water pump shaft that is not genuine SAAB should not be used. In your situation, I believe that the idler gear and the water pump shaft should be replaced as a set, either new from SAAB, or from a used engine where the gears are in good shape and have mated. Also, you can use the steel gears from a 1.85, which are 8 cog, stronger, and easier to remove and install. My 1972 99 has a 1976 2.0L "B" engine and has been set up with the 8 cog (eight teeth) and I have removed and installed the shaft in order to replace the bearing and seals and all went well. A slide hammer can be used to pull the shaft, unlike the 12 cog, which requires a special puller and a lot of caution when removing the brittle cast iron shaft. I do not recall if the impeller in my engine is for a 1.85L or a 2.0L, but I can check my records if you are interested in this swap.
