Which one are you painting? Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Fri, 24 Sep 2004 17:20:13 In Reply to: choking on paint prices, scott k, Fri, 24 Sep 2004 14:13:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The pics you sent weren't clear. The alabaster yellow 79? If that is the case, clearcoating is not needed for solid colors...it's a useless waste of money. Do you have an air compressor? From the pics it looked like you may have been sanding with a machine. Doing bodywork(filling dents, priming and blocking), masking, and final prep are the time and money eaters. Spraying the actual paint only takes a few hours. If you have a compressor, buy a touch up gun(Devilbiss Excel ES2) for $35, a gallon of urethane primer($80), and do your own finish work. If your compressor is small, spraying the paint in your garage won't work, as you'll run out of air while painting(not a good thing). I have a 7.5Hp compressor and 60 gallon tank. I paid a friend of mine to spray the outside of both of my 99 restos...well worth the money IMO, as I'm impatient spraying large areas. I can do engine bays and door jambs, but that's about it.
I've seen some good Macco spray jobs, but if they mask the car, you'll have overspray on stuff you don't want paint on. A good mask job takes me two days to do(16 hours). Even if there are minor problems with the paint job(dirt, bugs, runs), that is the reason they make 1500, 2000, and 2500 grit sandpapers.
