Still stuck in Reverse!

I love having a day off - especially when you can piss the whole thing away on your saab 99 and feel like you haven't gotten anywhere by day's end.
Here's my deal - per some good advise, I removed my reverse locking gear that I *thought* was inhibiting my gear shifter from moving out of R. Got the assembly back together and the shifter is still stuck! (oddly, where it's stuck, the gear shifter actually looks more like 1st gear position than Reverse, which is kinda strange, but anyway...) So I unbolted the gear lever assembly again, and I now I can move the gear shift rod (which goes through the firewall into the gear box) by hand into what feels like a neutral position and possibly even into another gear. After starting and disengaging the clutch it is always in reverse.
I would really like to get into the transmission housing to see if it's hung up in there somehow. Can I remove the side cover on there w/o taking the trans and engine out?
Thanks,
Scott K.
By the way, I did get my old headliner out, seats and carpeting out, so the day wasn't a complete wash!
