IT all depends on the version of either transmission, 4spd or 5spd. I would never swap out a later 4 speed for an early 5 speed. But a later 5 speed would be my choice over either. I suppose it would also depend on what my plans were for the car. I drive my 99 everyday, everywhere I go. The 5 speed is just a bit more practical for that reason. My shifter still says I only have 4 speeds, thought, in case originality in looks is important. I could always just tell the next owner (were there ever to be one) that if they wanted originality, they could just never shift past 4th gear...'course the 16V in there might be a different problem.
Compare final drive ratios and see if there is really much of a gain. If Bruce's '76 is an early one then he is toting the gear drive tranny with the tight ratios. Fun for scooting around town but horrible on the freeway. The later boxes had a much taller 4th gear and were you to swap with an early (weak) 5speed, even the top gear wouldn't change much.
Good luck. Swapping for a 5 speed is not hard work, really, beyond the normal work of swapping a transmission in general. Many of us have done it and can help in the process if needed.
