Bob,
One can not truly feel the standard of an old tired worn engine. A engine ought to be in excellent condition for maximum enjoyment. Again,I was amazed by the smoothness of that 1978 B engine; and I tell you the performance did not even stop on the pick up.
I like Turbos as well; however the feeling of a Turbo is different due to the lag..and the boosting. It feels like a rubber band..the car pulls gradually and then snap..the power comes in- and sometimes startling harsh.
A properly tuned non turbo B engine does not operate as a slug. One of my fastest Saabs, was a Cardinal red 79 900 EMS with 4 speed. That acceleration was immediate. Hmm..when Saabs were really Saabs!
As for smoothness...new bearings, proper machine shop work; and there is your smooth engine. What is very important, and tend to be overlook is a quiet exhaust. On older cars, people tend to buy aftermarket exhausts, such as MSS or have them custom made. So while the engine may be healthy, the sound is obtrusively loud and one can feel vibration through the car from a poor, booming exhaust. Exhaust is so important, for that "refined" feeling.
I feel it best to rebuild the engine. I know there is an issue with the timing chain, guides, etc, yet the B engine is proven. The only drawback is the waterpump, and if one heavily abuses the engine- the head on the B turbos.
What can I say; I like originality.
