For someone to simply say the B engine suck is silly. The guy you spoke to apparently worked on Saabs; yet still... The main fact why people tend to dislike the B engine is the waterpump, and that you need a special Saab tool to make the change a bit easier. Now that the engines are old, parts availabilty is definitely an issue.
I had a 78 99 GLE (non turbo) (coral white too)with 4 speed tranny that would swiftly and rapidly "come up" from dead stop to 90mph and beyond with no hesitation; and very very smooth.
I was shock for I did not drive a Saab with a B engine for years prior.
The same car dusted a 16valve SPG.
It all depends on how the components are such as the fuel distributor, etc. Also, B engine and the timing chain..make certain everything is tight there.
I will have to say that a B engine turbo may be a sluggish from dead start because the turbo of that year is large; so it will have to spool up. On the other hand once that baby spools up, the power kicks in hard.
But I can't underestimate that with a B engine or H, the fuel system has to be a peak for maximum performance. Use the proper antifreeze, and there out to be no problem.
