B engine 99s are a hoot to drive. Not quite as much fun in the 900, but that isn't the motor's fault.
The water pump does require special tools and techniques, but is generally reliable in the extreme once you have R&R'd it. Hey, at least if you lose all your belts, you can still get home with a B engine (in the daylight, anyway...).
CIS when it's working is very reliable. Troubleshooting it can be frustrating at times, but eventually the faulty part will be located and replaced.
The only other "bad" thing is that to set the valves right, you have to shuffle in the right size shims on the cam followers, a process which is detailed in the 99 manual, and requires cam removal from the head to access the shims.
But overall, having owned Saabs for 25 years, I can't say anything bad about the B engine at all.
Now ask me about some dim-witted dealer mechanics who worked on my B engines... ;-)
