The more I've read about this, the more I'm convinced that it is an alignment problem in the engine mounts. One thing to look at is that the axles sit in a fairly horizontal static position when the car is at reast with the wheels on the ground. If there is much of an angle, figure out what supports the power train that would cause it to be off.
Make certain that the inner end of the right side mount bracket is bolted tightly to the block/transmission. I've had these bolts loosen up and the engine/transmission aren't fully supported on that corner. Make sure the engine mount bracket doesn't have a break in it, especially where it bolts to the front cover. This was a weak point. I had one break on my first '79 900 GLE, and the replacement was heavily reinforced in the area of the break. As was already pointed out, make sure that you have the support tha goes from the top of the rubber engine mount to the side of the cylinder head.
I'll look at my '78 99L in the moring to see if there's anything else I can think of.
