OK...I took some measurements on the 75 from the axle to the body (at rest), it is a tad greater than 1" at the outermost hole in the body.
There is a few millimeters gap between the upper a-arm and the rubber buffers. The axle is completely horizontal.
After looking at it in the garage, I would agree now that for it to move that great a distance to rub seems un-likely(if everything else was perfect), even under hard acceleration.
The main reason I figured it was the buffers was because I associated it with a 99 that I owned years ago, that had detiorated buffers and the axle showed signs of rubbibg. Maybe I was reaching a bit for a conclusion/answer.
If he indeed had bad or missing engine bracketing on the passenger side, I completely agree the drivetrain would be dropped, but the clearance of the driveshaft would not make a drastic change where it comes out the hole in the body. It would tend to be closer to the body where it goes through the hole closest to the tranny. He never said where the rubbing of the axle was. I have also seen pics of his engine, and he does have the bracket from the right mount to the head.
Another possibility....with the buffers gone, and the front end jacked up off the ground(in his garage), the axles WILL rub the body....even with good buffers in place, the clearance is only a few millimeters. Is it possible he had the front end jacked up, and when he spun the wheels by hand, some rubbing occured and left marks on the driveshaft....hence he surmised this was the source of the noise.....and I agreed with him. I also agree with the dirt that builts up in the cavities. Both of my 99's created large piles of dirt when they were cleaned out.
Another possibility which can't be seen with the radiator in the car. The front engine bracket maybe be cracked or broken(as Andy stated), or the front motor mount might be toast. I have seen the bracket fail in more than one location over the course of 20 years of owning and wrenching. When accelerating, the engine will tilt back if not restrained by good front mounting, and the alternator will rub the heater core box, causing a noise and leaving a mark/groove on the box. Brently even posted that he likened the noise to the alternator rubbing the box....maybe that is the problem after all.
