How much fuel is in the tank?
You can often hear the fuel pump running, and though I never likened it to a hiss, I suppose that is possible. There is a feedback circuit that keeps the motor going once you start it. Otherwise, you only get so many seconds of fuel pump running after you release the key from "start".
I can't now recall how that works, but it's a safety feature. It may or may not be the problem with your car.
