Mark,
Check out how the car runs, if the gears are stripped it can be fixed with a new set of gears (I have 2 spare sets). If you are pulling the gears I would put in new balance shaft bushings too...they are usually first to go. You can check by trying to move the lower most pulley up and down on the front of the engine. The top pulley is a dummy one, meaning it's not attached to anything, just a free wheeling bearing. Other than that, judge the car for yourself. I personally like "complete" cars, that is not missing too many pieces (hubcaps, trim, interior) as I am the kind of person who will eventually try and track pieces down and that always ends up costing a lot. Stay away from rust hulks unless cheap and you just want to have fun for a few months. Waterpump is dead easy to do...it's in 2 parts, but sometimes the housing is eroded ($3 tube of weld-all fixed mine)
