I think if I were doing it, I would keep the wiring to the battery, but add a relay triggered by one of the ignition switch power connections on the fuse box. This way you have the fan turning off with the ignition, but the fuse panel and ignition switch don't have to carry the load of the fan.
For mine I also went direct to the battery, through an inline fuse holder, with the fan "hot" all the time. The stock fuse panel on my car is pretty dodgy and I didn't trust it for something as critical as a radiator fan. I also figure the after-run effect can't hurt. One day when I was working on it, I turned off the ignition, and the fan came on a few seconds *after* the engine stopped, so it would seem there's still a bit of a thermosiphon effect even with the water pump stopped.
