Good question. I have a '68 96 Deluxe that has two additional mods. First, someone swapped the standard 5 bolt hubs for 4 bolt Monte Carlo hubs with dual caliper front brake pistons. This also provides many more wheel options- 99 wheels fit for example. I met a fellow in Denver last week that's a walking encyclopedia of VSaab info and asked him if the Monte hubs EVER came on a '68 Deluxe- emphatically "no". So that one's a mystery. The car also has a fat black leather S and R wheel. I do know the story with that. The previous owner bought it on ebay and installed it.
I owned a '71 95 wagon once. I was doing some body work in preparation for a full repaint. I got looking at the "ears" on either side of the rear-most door- they stick out in an elfin manner and they just struck me as ugly. So I cut them off, welded in a flat, curved piece of metal- no more ears! I sold the car a couple of years later and always wondered if someone bought it and thought "what happened to the ears???"
