Hi Stephen,
One indicator of a loose pinion nut is for the speedo to take a jump when you back off the throttle. For example, if you're driving along at 50 mph and you let off the gas, the speedo will drop down by 5 or 10 mph. And the whine is not a good thing!
I recently took apart a VSaab with that very symptom and the pinion nut was loose. The gearbox was in decent shape otherwise, and I simply put on the new style nut with proper threadlock and the gearbox is now quiet and no more speedo jump.
Yes, you have to remove the drivetrain to do this. It's not hard, just a bit time-consuming.
I suppose you could have a bad speedo gear. I've never seen one go bad, but they do I guess. You could pull out the gear and see what it looks like. But the whine is the giveaway as well. I've had at least 20 gearboxes apart in my day and I've NEVER seen one with the pinion nut tight. Except the two that I found that someone had WELDED the nut to the shaft...
If you do have a bad speedo gear, I could send you a spare.
