A few years back when the US was in transition from leaded to unleaded and both were available a chemist for an oil company told me that the unleaded was a better cut in the refining process and that mixing leaded and unleaded has a superadditive effect on the octane. Maybe the combination of additives in the unleaded and the high lead content in the avgas was just too much.
