Where are all you 99 supporters?

Steve and others have made some very good arguments supporting the 95/96. I am sure they must be a great car. Unfortunately in Perth, Western Australia the 95/96 is very rare (ie none on the road and I think one in a collection, unless its gone over east) so all I have experience with is the 99 and 900.

Anyway I have owned two 99s, a 1978 99Turbo and currently own a 1972 99 two door sedan.

The 99 is a great car and very similar to the classic 900 model. As Steve said the 99 is a great touring car, particularly the turbo. Unfortunately I would have to agree with some comments about the reliability of the turbo. I had a nasty run with my 99t with repeated head problems and a frequently siezed wastegate....but the wastegate is relatively easy to repair.

My 1972 99 on the other hand is a fantastic car. It is old enough to be distinctive and drives like a rocket and handles like its on rails. (it drives well enough to keep up with most modern cars, within reason)

Although I have never worked on the 95/96 I find the 99 relatively easy to work on. I have managed to do carb swaps, oil changes, suspension modifications, interior rebuilds, brake pad changes and so on with out any prior knowledge or experience. Finally as Karl.no and some others will tell you the b20 motor (the engine found in all 99 saabs after 1971-72) is almost indestructable. I have driven my car in hill climbs, motorkanhas, and sprints and it is still going relatively strong (considering that the engine has possibly not been rebuilt since new). Also the old style gearbox is not that bad...mine has it and it is still running, albeit noisily, but considering its age and the type of driving I use it for I think it is doing extremley well. As for the water pump yes they are fidily, but if they are fixed properly they are reliable.

If you like old but modern cars go the 99, but having said that if I ever saw a 95/96 in Perth I would be doing all sorts of things to get my hands on it!

Justin
