Thank you for all the responses. You have reinforced my spine to have the job done right.
Answers to some questions: The car went in for rust removal and restoration. The A-pillar previously was damaged in an accident. On the other hand, the car had a windshield in place when I gave it to the body shop. On the third(?) hand, perhaps the previous body shop trimmed the windshield rather than restore the A-pillar to its proper height.
The bottem line is that a proper windshield will need to be installed properly, i.e. no glue. The only alternative I see is negotiating a transfer of the car to the body shop so that I can wash my hands of the whole matter (the body shop has a lot of time into the car already). Bringing another body shop in only clouds responsibility for the finished product. Parting with the car, which I have owned since 1978 when it was new, will not be easy, but I may have to reconcile myself to that result.
