I had a 1986 Mercedes 300E that I bought new. It had about 150,000 miles on it, but was in impeccable condition when it was badly rear-ended in 1992, and totalled by the insurance company. The insurance companies do not think these old cars are worth much, and have their own price guides that they go by. In my case they were able to have their appraiser go over the car. Where his report said "so-and-so in average conditioin" (such as interior) I was able to produce invoices showing I had recently spent money there, and get it bumped back up to "excellent". However, all this did was minimize the deductions from top value they tried to take off. From what I recall, the repairs had to be recent (maybe within 18 months?), and I don't think mechanical work counted. Plead your case with the NADA guides (if higher than theirs), and show invoices to prove yours was excellent. in the end I did get about a $1,000 more than when we started. But realize they don't have to budge. Good luck.
