I think the distance encompassing all of the New England states also kills it.
A club like WASAAB works because, although its members may sit in D.C. gridlock for more than three hours to get to a gathering (just kidding guys), it is a much narrower geographical slice. I'll drive four hours each way from Burlington, Vermont, to Southeastern Connecticut to spend the weekend with friends but am a little less likely to make a round trip in one day to spend a few hours at a pizza place in Central Massachusetts to meet up with other Saab owners.
That said, large portions of the New England states don't seem to have the same enthusiasm for Saabs as for other makes. When I was, gasp, a VW owner, the Vermont club had GTGs nearly every week. Around Burlington, chances are the person in the Saab next to yours doesn't really spend that much time thinking about the pure Swedish majesty of their ride.
So, New England's a tough call in my book as to what to do for a club. Sure, there are pockets of intense Saab interest, but, for the majority of the region, it is too little interest spread thin over too many miles.
