Similiar thing happened to me. Big thing on these cars is the clutch cable. That would be my uninformed diagnosis, the parts about 50 bucks, I'd say 150 max with labor, check forum for do it yourself instructions. A person who knows tricks discussed on this forum will do a better job.
Doubtful scenerio: If you need to replace the clutch, you will feel it getting worse gradually over time. (I may be wrong, but never had a catrastriphic failure myself) Thats going to be around 350 parts, 800 with labor. You definitly need a good saab mechanic. But a worn clutch can cause the cable to break.
Transmission would be other idea, and that would cost more, if its newer, still under warrentee, older, maybe consider getting a new car. If this happened, you probably heard a sound like a gernade exploding in your engine compartment? Never happened to me, so its a guess...
