I did mine (94 - V6) without the timing belt change. It is a little tricky and yes you need to pull off the intake manifold (change the spark plugs while you are there) but with small enough or flexible enough hands and a little improvising, the thermostat was changed. But the question to ask first is are you sure the heat problem is the thermostat? First make sure the sensor system inside the car is clean and the little fan is pulling in air; both of these can lessen the cabin heat if not working properly.
