First, there is no such thing as a maintenance FREE car battery. I think use of the term is a crime. Basically there are low maintenance batteries. Sometimes a cell will short. When this happens you probably will not be able to start the car even though it started fine the time before. It is the nature of the beast. As far as failures go, My 95 9K is on it's third battery at 55K. The second one failed within a month because the idiot who installed it did not tighten the clamps to hold it in place. A few years back I went through 4 Die Hards (whatever their 72 month battery is) in a year. On the 5th one it lasted till I got rid of the car (VW Corrado) 3 years later. My suspicion on that one was the voltage regulator, as I replaced it event though 3 shops including a dealer who I respect told me the VR was fine. After the VR change all was OK. But hey, who's to say it wasn't the batteries?
Don't be mislead about cold weather being the death of batteries. Hot climates are more severe as the batteries loose water due to evaporation, etc. and AC running full tilt are a big drian. If you make short trips, even more so. Also even though you may have a 100 AMP alternator, at idle it puts out nowhere near that. So short trips, hot weather, and heavy traffic can really strain a battery.
I agree they should last more than 20K, but experience tells me you will get some that don't.
